W.O. #5 – Five Haikus desiree, June 29, 2019August 29, 2019 Hello! I took a bit of a hiatus to work on a writing submission for a short story competition (more on that in the weeks to come) and to wrap up my last month at work. My husband probably has mixed feelings about haikus. He’s actually a good poet, but when a former teacher uses them as a form of punishment, that can really mess up your psyche. So, let’s power through the world of harsh teachers and tackle this week’s writing opportunity: Haikus! Did you ever have to write one in school? Haikus are poems that originated from Japan. They are short; the first line has five syllables, the next one has seven, and the last one has five. Haikus give glimpses of one moment, action, or scene. (Google for examples.) Let’s write one (or two, five…ten?) this week! And, I wrote five, of course: In the walnut shadeSway on the hammock and breatheIn slivers of sun. Morning glories areVines of innocently cloakedChokers of promise. Dutch Bros tea tastes likeIt’s on a mission to beA fake Miami. Pokemon cards spewedThroughout my life destined forThe trash or bookmark. Chasing sunset huesTo get closer to You butYou are bright in heart. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Now there are more rules if you are following the traditional Japanese form of haiku, but I decided to go with the let’s-just-get-something-wrote view. Try it out! Even if you don’t consider yourself a “writer” (that’s me laughing my annoying laugh), a small amount of time and a subject can surprise you. Update coming soon. In the meantime, tap those keys and waste some ink.
